Dr John Reid

Four miles south-east of Lockerbie lies Burnswark Hill in Dumfriesshire, rising to nearly 1,000 feet from the surrounding countryside. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Solway basin. On the tabletop summit the remains of a 17-acre Roman hillfort have been uncovered. Their configuration is unique in Britain, and attempts to understand their significance have provoked considerable controversy for over half a century, with the purpose of these complex earthworks confounding archaeologists.
Excavations at Burnswark have revealed a greater number and variety of Roman missiles than anywhere else in Britain, while recent investigations and new techniques suggest this could be the site of one of the earliest conflicts between the Roman Empire and the Caledonians. John will bring us up-to-date with the results of the latest research.
Dr John Reid is Chairman of The Trimontium Trust, Melrose, which runs a series of activities for members and the general public including lectures, outings and other activities.

The Tower Blocks of Cumbernauld

Venue: Cumbernauld Community Enterprise Centre, Brown Street, Cumbernauld, G67 1AA

University of Edinburgh

On the Saturday 24 September 2016, the University of Edinburgh’s Tower Block Project are hosting a free exhibition on the social and architectural history of Cumbernauld. Memories Roadshow Bring along old family photos taken in Cumbernauld or the surrounding area and share your memories of growing up in the town with Scotland's Urban Past (SUP). We will digitise any photographs for you and your contributions will help to create a full record of Cumbernauld's local history in the National Archive of the Historic Environment and the Tower Block Project's image archive. All physical images are returned on the day after being scanned. Exhibition The exhibition itself will look at Cumbernauld from it’s inception, as the result of mass overcrowding in Glasgow, and the vision of Cumbernauld as a New Town and a site of opportunity for residents and businesses alike. Using photographs, advertising material, letters and plans from the 1950s through to the 1990s, visitors can explore the ways in which the town was envisioned and run by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation, as well as shaped and experienced by those who made the move there. The exhibition will pay special attention to the work of Brian Miller, Cumbernauld’s town artist from 1962, and the public art which he created, much of which has now disappeared. Exploring Cumbernauld Cumbernauld resident Jean O’Reilly will also be running free guided social history walks, which will leave from Cumbernauld Community Enterprise Centre throughout the day. Over the weekend of the 24 - 25 September, the flats above Cumbernauld shopping centre will also be open to the public for the first time in decades, giving visitors a rare glimpse at the housing intended for Cumbernauld's elite.

We are in the middle of four years of centenaries of World War I, the war to end all wars which, sadly, was no such thing. Many people are naturally interested in the part their forebears played in the devastating conflict. I grew up knowing that my granny’s brother had been gassed in the war, and was give a one-way ticket to Australia, with the assumption that he wouldn’t live long. (He got his revenge by surviving long enough to raise a large family, many of whom I met when I visited Australia some years back.)

Partly in response to the centenary, many organisations have release records relating to World War I. Many of these are available free of charge, so we thought we’d list some of them.

One of the most useful sites is the Scottish War Memorial Project, organised by the Scottish Military Research Group. Designed as a discussion forum, the site is arranged into geographical sections, with a remarkable amount of detail on war memorials, and the individuals commemorated on them. It is an ongoing, collaborative project, and is created entirely by volunteers.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established by Royal Charter in 1917, and is the official body responsible for maintaining cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in 154 countries, honouring the 1,700,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died in World War I and World War II. The website includes a searchable database of memorials, which often include additional information to help identify your ancestors.

Many Scots served in the armed forces of other countries, notably Australia and Canada. Library and Archives Canada have an excellent site with a searchable database of the service records of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Many Scottish-born soldiers served with the Australian and New Zealand armed forces. The National Archives of Australia and Archives New Zealand have built a dedicated website to help you find your Anzac ancestors, containing digitised service records.

Unfortunately, a large proportion of the British service records from WWI were lost in a fire. And unlike Canada and Australia, the records are not available for free. Here at Old Scottish, we have developed innovative software to match records across a variety of free and subscription databases to help provide a fuller picture of Scottish servicemen, both those who died and those who survived. Some examples of how our systems can help join the dots are shown on our Auchterarder in World War I page. To mark the ongoing centenary commemorations, we are pleased to offer a special discounted rate for WWI research services – get in touch for a free initial consultation.

Do you know what’s under your feet? (Part 2)

Clive Waghorn

Venue: Queens Hall, Charlestown, KY11 3EG

Gellet Society

Preceded by AGM. HMS Tralair and the Hawkcraig Admiralty Experimental Establishment Station are Aberdour’s best kept wartime secret. It was home to a bustling wartime research station and vanguard of the fight to protect Britain’s shores from the deadly threat of U-boats. Other than two or three shattered concrete hut bases and the crumbling ruins of an old pier, nothing remains of the once bustling station. During its short period in operation, major technological advances were achieved in the battle against the German U-boat, and around 4,000 officers and men were trained there. Diana is a member of the Aberdour Cultural Association and is author of their first published book “Listen Up! ”. Diana’s book draws together information from local and national records along with personal recollections of the people who worked around the base.
