Sheriff Court paternity decrees
Index to over 43,000 Sheriff Court affiliation and aliment decrees. When a single mother took the father of her child to court, seeking maintenance payments for her child, she would often go to the Sheriff Court. The extract decrees typically identify the father and mother, give the date of the child's birth, and stipulate the amount the father was required to pay. This index currently covers all records at least from 1800 to 1919, with the exception of Orkney and Shetland.

Sheriff Courts heard much more than just affiliation and aliment decrees. Our growing index, currently with over 30,000 entries, lists a wide range of civil court cases, and can provide fascinating information for local, family and social and economic historians.
