Biggar Gasworks Steam Days

Venue: Biggar Gaswork Museum

For upwards of 130 years – from 1839 to 1973 – Biggar Gasworks made coal-gas for the town and surrounding district. It was one of the first small-town gasworks to open in Scotland, and among the last to close. It is the only preserved gasworks left in Scotland. Not long afterwards, it passed into State care, to be preserved as a lasting reminder of an industry that provided so much benefit to all the country’s citizens. During the 'Steam Days' the boiler will be operating and driving various items of steam driven machines associated with gas production and distribution. Tickets can be purchased on the day. £5 adults, £4 concessions, £3 children. Under 5s go free, children must be accompanied by an adult.

The tour is around half an hour and gives a brief history about the Commentator’s house and then proceeds through the building stopping to look and discuss various artefacts. There are green men, piss pots, inkwells, posset pots, spectacles, heart caskets and much more to be seen. A Journey Through Scotland's Past: Age of Industry

Ali Davey, Project Manager, Traditional Skills & Materials, Conservation Directorate, and Mark Watson, Deputy Head of Industrial Heritage, Conservation Directorate, present Scotland's Age of Industry. 'On the early 20th Century blacksmithing firm of Thomas Hadden'. The Edinburgh-based firm Thomas Hadden was a prolific producer of architectural wrought ironwork during the early 20th Century. Their style, with trademark motifs such as birds and berries, was distinctive and perfectly suited to the tastes of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau designers. This talk looks at their design inspirations and how their style influenced the work they produced for customers. 'Industrial architecture: adaptable resource '. Heritage is about the future, not the past. The best possible use for a building may not have been thought of yet, but the endless variety of options may be confidently tested on robust industrial buildings that resonate with innate meaning and potential for sustainable use. The Skirmish Hill Walk

Venue: Melrose Parish Church, Melrose, TD6 9SF

Borders Heritage Festival

Entry £3. Free to Trimontium Trust & MHAA This walk leads along the riverbank to the information board located on the corner of the field, known as the Skirmish Hill, where it is said the Battle of Melrose took place on 25 July, 1526. It was here that Walter Scott of Buccleuch led 600 Borderers on horseback in an ambush attack to free the young King James V from the forces of the Earl of Angus and Ker of Cessford. A visit will be made into the grounds of Darnick Tower from where it is said that young James V watched the skirmish. The walk continues uphill to the ‘Turn Again Stone’ where it is said that, in fleeing from the battlefield, a member of Buccleuch’s defeated force, turned and speared to death the pursuing Ker of Cessford. The walk will return downhill to the Parish Church grounds via the village of Darnick.

Kristina Taylor of The Gardens Trust will conduct a 2 hour guided walk around Gosford Landscape with visits into the Mauso - leum, the Curling House (with a talk by Richard Gillanders on its stone collection and decoration) and the Octagon Room in the house.
