It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Solway basin. On the tabletop summit the remains of a 17-acre Roman hillfort have been uncovered. Their configuration is unique in Britain, and attempts to understand their significance have provoked considerable controversy for over half a century, with the purpose of these complex earthworks confounding archaeologists.
