Upcoming family history talks and events in Scotland, 22 - 28 February 2016

(Open discussion meetings at Luncarty are free) Monday, February 22 2016, 7.30 pm The Coal Mines and Quarries of Carlops and West Linton James Waugh Venue: Gibson Craig Memorial Hall, Lanark Road West, Currie Currie & District Local History Society James Waugh gave the Society an interesting talk on Glencorse Old Kirk on his last visit. His talk this time is based upon the the history of the Beresford family of Macbiehill, near Carlops, who were the main landowners on that area. It also covers the stories of the women and children who worked in the mines. Coal production at Coalyburn, Harlaw Muir and Kitleyknowe was vital to the production of Limestone and there were also large limestone quarries in that area between Carlops and West Linton. Venue: Carmyllie Church Hall, Carmyllie, Arbroath, DD11 2QZ Wednesday, February 24 2016, 7.30 pm The Highland Diary of a Victorian Lady Jonathan McColl Venue: Highland Archive Centre, Bught Park, Inverness Highland Family History Society Thursday, February 25 2016, 2.00 pm Noblewomen of Atholl: Work, Welfare and War Dr Nicola Cowmeadow Venue: Sandeman Room, AK Bell Library Dr Nicola Cowmeadow will focus on the early life and work of Katharine (Kitty) Stewart Murray, 8th Duchess of Atholl. She will examine Kitty's place in the Murray of Atholl family, tracing her path into politics. In addition, Kitty Atholl's life will be compared and contrasted with the life of an earlier Katherine, the first Duchess of Atholl, who lived in the era of the Glorious Revolution and the Union of Scotland and England of 1707. She is much less well known but was also a highly politicised woman who used her position, much like Kitty, to engage with politics in an earlier period in which women had no formal role in politics or church affairs. This presentation will show how these noblewomen of Atholl created a role for themselves in times of economic strife, political upheaval and war.
