She will examine Kitty's place in the Murray of Atholl family, tracing her path into politics. In addition, Kitty Atholl's life will be compared and contrasted with the life of an earlier Katherine, the first Duchess of Atholl, who lived in the era of the Glorious Revolution and the Union of Scotland and England of 1707. She is much less well known but was also a highly politicised woman who used her position, much like Kitty, to engage with politics in an earlier period in which women had no formal role in politics or church affairs. This presentation will show how these noblewomen of Atholl created a role for themselves in times of economic strife, political upheaval and war.
