White, Black and Grey: recent discoveries at Aberdeen’s medieval friaries – Edinburgh
Alison Cameron
Venue: National Museum of Scotland
Society of Antiquaries of Scotland
Ms Alison Cameron from Cameron Archaeology Ltd will present a lecture entitled “White, Black and Grey: recent discoveries at Aberdeen’s medieval friaries”.
Recent excavations at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen have revealed 30 burials from the medieval Dominican (Black) friary as well as hints at remains of the buildings. This talk will present the latest evidence from this site and look at the other excavated medieval friaries, Franciscan (Grey) and Carmelite (white).
Ms Cameron’s first dig was with Professor Chris Morris FSA Scot at Birsay, Orkney summer 1980. She loved it and never looked back. Obtaining a B Tech (Hons) from Bradford in 1984, Alison specialised in human skeletal remains and came to Aberdeen in 1985 to carry out a human bone contract to examine bones from Carmelite friaries at Aberdeen, Linlithgow and Perth. She loved the city, got a job in Aberdeen City Council Archaeology Unit where she worked for 24 years until persuaded by Council cuts to take voluntary severance.
In 2010 she started Cameron Archaeology Ltd and now carries out archaeological projects in Aberdeen and Shire, Angus and Moray.

Penicuik House and its Designed Landscape
Sir Robert Clerk
Venue: Auditorium, Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre, Peebles
Purchased in 1654, Penicuik House and grounds were designed by successive generations of the Clerk family, one of the most remarkable families in Scottish cultural history. In the 1760s Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet of Penicuik, and John Baxter the Elder, a renowned builder of that period, were responsible for creating one of the finest UK examples of Palladian architecture and designed landscapes. Extended with two large wings by the eminent Victorian architect David Bryce in 1857, a fire in 1899 destroyed the roof and interiors and left the once-magnificent building in ruins.
In 1985, the Penicuik House Preservation Trust was created to consolidate the ruin. Work began in 2007 and was completed in 2014, paving the way for a new project, launched in 2015, to focus on restoring the many unique structures within the Designed Landscape. Sir Robert will bring us up to date on this exciting venture.
Sir Robert Clerk is the owner of Penicuik Estate, chair of Penicuik House Preservation Trust and Lord Lieutenant of Midlothian.
