Find the father request
Thank you for your Find the Father request.
This search service came about because we are often working in the National Records of Scotland indexing for the Old Scottish website and carrying out lookups and genealogical research for our clients.
Many of the sources we examine each day contain records which help to establish the paternity of individuals born outwith marriage and whose birth records contain a mother's name but no father's name. A large majority of these records are not yet available online so we hope that by offering this search service we can make the information that they hold more easy to access and available to distant researchers. The records included in this search are held onsite in the National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh. If you would like us to search ScotlandsPeople, offsite NRS records or records in other archives please contact us separately http://www.oldscottish.com/contact.html.
As a rule we do not include pre 1855 baptism where it is evident that the father is named on later vital records and the OPR baptisms for the birthplace of the child are not extant. Similarly enquiries which do not contain a mother's name a search cannot take place.
The search has become very popular since it was introduced in December 2016, consequently we cannot report negative search results but if you would like to add further information (e.g. links to your online tree/images of later records for the individual/mother etc.) which may help the search or receive an update regarding our searches please feel free to contact us. If you would like us to search records ScotlandsPeople, offsite NRS records or records in other archives/repositories please contact us separately http://www.oldscottish.com/contact.html and we shall be pleased to provide an estimate of fees where research is feasible.
We do not charge a fee for the initial search but request a modest finder's fee for a transcription and/ image of the relevant records which allows us to maintain www.oldscottish.com and provide more indexes.
If we find a father we shall contact you by email. Successful searches can take anything from a couple of days to several months depending on the period and circumstance of the parents and the availability of extant ecclesiastical and civil sources. For instance if a child is orphaned, a mother/family migrate, or a father absconds, records can be found in districts that seem unrelated to an individual's place of birth.
We are indexing more records from across Scotland all the time and intend to update our parish lists with a release of individuals whose fathers have been found shortly. These releases will be announced via our blog http://www.oldscottish.com/blog and our social media accounts.
You can find out more about Old Scottish Genealogy and Family History here. For records and lookups are organised by county see here.
