Our founders
Old Scottish Genealogy and Family History is a partnership between Penny Lewis and Fergus Smith. We are committed to making Genealogy and Family History Research more accessible and affordable. Penny and Fergus met whilst undergraduate students at the University of St Andrews, Fife in the late 1980’s.

Penny is our lead genealogist and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies from The University of Strathclyde. She drew up her first genealogy chart at just 9 years old (and she still has it safely archived away)!
Before training as a genealogist she completed a BSc (Hons) in Psychology at St Andrews, and her early career involved project management, customer training and major account management within the telecommunications industry. She is our 'people person' whether in the past or the present and responsible for our tweets!
Outside Old Scottish, Penny is a keen gardener and enjoys family life at her home in rural Perthshire. She is interested in Stained Glass after studying genealogical aspects of ecclesiastical windows and mural memorial monuments whilst completing her postgraduate studies.

Fergus graduated in Computational Science at St Andrews before travelling and putting his 8 languages to good use as a translator. For the past decade he has been developing database systems for genealogical research after returning to Edinburgh to manage his family’s rare books business.
He is responsible for our large reference library and develops and maintains our IT systems and databases.
Outwith Old Scottish Fergus expands his personal collection of rare Scottish books and enjoys spending time with his young daughter.
